. “No More Excuses”: Oyefusi Demands Female Vice Presidential Candidate from Opposition Bloc

Former deputy governor candidate,Oyefusi Abiodun Islamiat, has called on Nigeria’s major opposition figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and other emerging coalitions—to consider fielding a female vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.

Abiodun made the call in a statement on Tuesday, describing the move as “strategic, overdue, and essential” for any opposition bloc seeking to mount a credible challenge in the next election cycle.

According to her, women have contributed significantly to national development across sectors—legislation, cabinet leadership, business, and civil society—yet continue to be excluded from the highest levels of executive leadership. She noted that this gap has become “politically costly and morally indefensible,” particularly at a time when the country is in need of innovation, inclusivity, and renewed public confidence.

Oyefusi argued that presenting a qualified woman as vice-presidential candidate would send a strong message of reform and differentiate opposition parties from what she described as “recycled political patterns.”

She emphasized that the proposal goes beyond gender representation, stating that it offers a strategic advantage. “Women constitute nearly half of Nigeria’s electorate. Young voters are demanding change, and civil society continues to question the absence of women in decision-making,” she said.

She added that Nigeria has a strong pool of female leaders—former ministers, seasoned legislators, technocrats, economists, and human-rights advocates—who have earned national credibility and are capable of serving at the highest level.

Oyefusi noted that for opposition leaders including Atiku, the ADC, Labour-aligned blocs, and other political coalitions, choosing a female running mate would demonstrate a commitment to genuine political renewal.

“The moment is historic, the opportunity is here, and the political gains are undeniable,” she stated. “If the opposition is serious about offering a new direction for Nigeria, the path is clear: field a female vice-presidential candidate.”
