Tension in Jakande Estate as Residents Protest Demolition, Call on ADC to Intervene
Tension escalated on Wednesday at the Jakande Housing Estate, Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, as residents staged fresh protests over the demolition of houses and alleged forced evictions without adequate consultation or due process.
Some residents, who reportedly protested peacefully, were arrested and detained, further heightening anxiety within the community. As of Wednesday morning, several stakeholders and affected residents were said to be heading to the Lagos State Government House in Alausa to continue the protest, with media organisations invited to cover the development.
The crisis, which began early last year following initial demolition exercises in the estate, has continued to generate outrage among residents who insist that the government failed to follow lawful procedures or engage meaningfully with the community before displacing occupants.
Reacting to the development, Tosin Casino Harsogba, Ward Coordinator of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for Lekki-Ikate and environs, called on the party’s Lagos State leadership and stakeholders to urgently intervene in the matter.
He warned that the continued displacement of residents could affect over 5,000 registered voters in the area, describing the situation as both a humanitarian and political concern.
“The people of Jakande Housing Estate are grassroots voters who play a major role during elections. Political power comes from the people, not from the top. ADC must take this case as a serious engagement point towards 2027,” Harsogba said.
He urged ADC leadership to use the situation as an opportunity to demonstrate commitment to grassroots protection and social justice, stressing that failure to act could cost the party significant political goodwill in Eti-Osa.
As of press time, the Lagos State Government had yet to issue an official statement on the reported arrests and ongoing protests.
