Protect Your Vote: Odukoya Warns Against Releasing Personal Electoral Data

Hon. Adeyinka Odukoya, a House of Representatives aspirant in Alimosho Federal Constituency under the platform of the African Democratic Congress, has called on members and supporters of the party to distance themselves from the ongoing online registration exercise being conducted by the All Progressives Congress, warning that it is entirely different from the official voter registration process organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement in Alimosho, Odukoya stressed that the APC’s online registration should not be confused with the legitimate Permanent Voter Card (PVC) registration and updating exercise conducted solely by INEC. According to him, INEC remains the only constitutionally recognized body empowered to conduct voter registration and manage electoral data in Nigeria.
He expressed concern that the ongoing APC registration exercise, which reportedly requires participants to submit sensitive personal information, could expose unsuspecting citizens to manipulation and electoral fraud. Odukoya alleged that the collection of personal data, including voter details, may be used to compromise the integrity of voters’ choices before election day.
“It is important for Nigerians to understand the difference between party registration and voter registration,” he said. “No political party has the authority to conduct voter registration or demand sensitive electoral information from citizens under the guise of political participation.”
The ADC chieftain warned that releasing copies or details of Permanent Voter Cards to political actors poses a significant risk. He cautioned that such information could potentially be cloned or misused to interfere with an individual’s voting rights before they arrive at their designated polling units.
Odukoya therefore urged the leadership of the ADC at all levels to embark on a robust public awareness campaign, including counter-advertisements and sustained media engagement, to educate Nigerians on safeguarding their electoral data. He emphasized the need for coordinated publications across traditional and digital media platforms to prevent misinformation and protect voters from exploitation.
In addition, he advised citizens not to disclose their National Identification Number (NIN) or Bank Verification Number (BVN) to politicians or party agents in exchange for gifts or financial inducements. According to him, such information is highly sensitive and can be misused for identity theft, financial fraud, or electoral manipulation.
He reiterated that protecting personal data is now a critical aspect of safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy. “The power of the vote lies with the people,” Odukoya stated. “No Nigerian should surrender that power by carelessly releasing personal information to any political group.”
The Alimosho aspirant concluded by calling on security agencies and relevant regulatory authorities to closely monitor political activities that involve mass data collection, ensuring that the rights and privacy of citizens are not violated in the build-up to future elections.
