ADC Gains Momentum as Nine Senators Defect ....Lagos Chairman Says Party Becoming True Opposition Force

The recent defection of prominent senators including Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh and Ireti Kingibe alongside six others to the African Democratic Congress has been described as a major political turning point ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political observers say the development signals growing confidence in the ADC as a credible alternative platform capable of challenging the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress and the shrinking influence of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Reacting to the development, the Lagos State Chairman of the ADC, Hon. George Ashiru, said the defections reflect the growing national acceptance of the party’s ideology and leadership direction.
According to him, the movement of respected lawmakers into the ADC shows that many Nigerian politicians are beginning to align with a platform that prioritizes integrity, democratic values, and people-centered governance.

“This development confirms what we have been saying for years , that the ADC is steadily becoming the political home for progressive leaders who truly want to rescue Nigeria,” Ashiru said.

He noted that the entry of experienced lawmakers like Abaribe and Umeh would strengthen legislative advocacy within the National Assembly and help position the party as a formidable opposition voice.
“The calibre of leaders joining the ADC shows that Nigerians are tired of recycled politics. What we are witnessing is the beginning of a broader realignment that will reshape the political landscape before 2027,” he added.

Ashiru further stated that the party structure across states, including Lagos, is already preparing to receive more political actors and grassroots supporters who are seeking a credible alternative.
Political analysts believe the latest defections could trigger a wave of similar movements across the country, potentially expanding the ADC’s influence both in the National Assembly and at the grassroots level.

With the 2027 elections gradually approaching, many observers now see the ADC as one of the fastest-growing political platforms capable of redefining Nigeria’s opposition politics.
