Thousands Flee Nasarawa Communities on Foot Amid Incessant Armed Bandit Attacks

Fresh waves of insecurity have forced thousands of residents in parts of Nasarawa State to abandon their homes and flee on foot following repeated attacks by armed bandits.

Eyewitness accounts and emerging reports indicate that entire communities—especially in rural and border areas—have been thrown into panic as gunmen launch sporadic raids, often targeting vulnerable farming settlements. Many residents reportedly fled with only what they could carry, trekking long distances to seek refuge in safer locations.

The attacks are part of a broader pattern of escalating violence in Nigeria’s North-Central region, where banditry, herder-farmer clashes, and organized criminal groups continue to threaten lives and livelihoods. Security experts note that porous borders between Nasarawa and neighbouring states like Benue have made it easier for armed groups to carry out hit-and-run operations.

In recent years, similar incidents have led to deaths, destruction of property, and mass displacement. For instance, previous attacks in Nasarawa communities have left several people dead and many others injured, with residents often caught unprepared.

Local sources say the latest wave of attacks has created a humanitarian situation, as displaced families struggle with lack of shelter, food, and basic necessities. Women and children are said to be the most affected, with many spending nights in open fields or neighboring towns.

Despite ongoing military operations aimed at curbing bandit activities, insecurity persists in remote areas where security presence remains limited. Authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the latest displacement, but calls are growing for stronger intervention and sustained protection for affected communities.

The situation underscores the continuing security challenges facing Nigeria, where rural populations remain highly exposed to armed violence and forced displacement.
